November 14 & 17th, 2021

UPCOMING AT DEKORRA
Current COVID Response: Updated 11/12/2021
When the Council met on August 12th it made several changes to our indoor policy. In the last couple of weeks, COVID activity and infections have gone from low levels in Columbia County to the same high levels as they were at Easter. Since even the vaccinated can spread the virus and we do not want to stop our ministries or visits to the homebound, here are the changes effective August 22nd: 1) Mask (i.e. multilayered cotton or silk masks with no vents, disposable surgical masks, N95 masks) will be required for all indoor activities for anyone 6 years old or older unless there is a medical exemption. We believe this matches the practices of Lodi Schools; 2) We will mostly remain seated during worship, avoid close contact during the sharing the peace, pre-distribute communion elements via the Fellowship Cups (you may bring your own), and return to limited indoor seating and social spacing;
3a) A/C or Heat in Sanctuary turned on 60 minutes before the start of worship; 3b) Engage the HVAC system in Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall 5 minutes before the start of worship only (have the fan running in the Sanctuary at that time) but only open the doors away CS, this should give us some of the benefits of airflow, keep our sanctuary a little more comfortable, and avoid most of the noise; 4) Since the most dangerous thing we do is sing indoors as a group, we will stop doing that and rely on a single soloist/cantor once again; and 5) Meetings and fellowship can happen indoors, but we ask that everyone keep their mask on except with consuming their beverages. We are Christians. Our ancestors in the faith worshiped and experienced God by rivers, in homes, in deserts, and even under the Noon sun with no shade. While it was not the most comfortable option, it was the most faithful option at that time. Your Council believes the same here. Please be kind to one another and know that your Council remains vigilant and is monitoring the county’s weekly COVID report.
Please Excuse our Mess – Audio/Visual Upgrade Update
Our screens have arrived but the work is not done. In the meantime, we will do little “holy experiments” to try to get the sound a little better. If you struggled to hear this week, then please let a member of the Worship Committee know right away. He hopes to be able to fully use the screens by November, God willing.

WANT HOME COMMUNION OR PASTORAL CARE? JUST CALL! *DEDICATED PASTORAL CARE OFFICE HOURS ADDED*
Wanting a little Dekorra touch? Need an ear or some advice? Missing Communion? Worried or not feeling well? Pastor Sterling is excited to talk with you and minister to you! We can connect by phone, Zoom, or for a short in-person visit. Call or email the office to schedule a time. If you are having a pastoral emergency, then please get the pastor’s cell phone number off the voicemail. Please do not be shy - the pastor is here for you! Also, starting on October 1st, 2021, the pastor has walk-in pastoral care office hours on Fridays from 10a-2p. No appointments are needed (and no appointments will be made). Just show up or call and he will engage folks on a first-come-first-served basis. If you call and get the voicemail, the pastor will return your call that day.
Thank you from Kathy Pederson to all who helped with the Christmas boxes for Operation Christmas Child for Samaritans Purse. We will deliver 75 boxes this week! Special thanks to Robin K, Rose H, Bev T. for all their help packing and to all who did contribute!  God Bless!
How We Are Resettling the Refugees at Fort McCoy – Here’s How You Can Help
We’ve all heard a lot in the news about the evacuation of Afghans and many people have questions. Join us on Tuesday, November 16th at 7 pm CT vial Zoom when staff from Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan presents “The ABC’s of Refugee Resettlement”. You’ll learn how the program works, how you can help, and the latest information about the evolving situation of refugees from Afghanistan. This meeting will be held via Zoom and is open to everyone to attend. For details and to register please go to https://scsw-elca.org/news/ and click on the November 4th “What Matters” synod newsletter.
Needed: Crafters for Prayer Cloth Ministry A prayer cloth is a mini-version of a prayer shawl. The crafter infuses prayer to provide love and comfort to the person who will receive the Prayer Cloth. They are small enough to be tucked in pockets, and purses.  They also can be carried into surgery and taken on vacations. Anyone who needs comfort or wants support in their prayer life could use one. Our Pastor could take them on visits, have a basket available to take, or donate to local community facilities. Are you a knitter, crocheter, or quilter? Just want to help? You can sign up on the bulletin board, and patterns and yard will be in the Fellowship Hall starting in October. Please contact Jill Emmons if you have any questions or details on what these look like – (608) 692-1425 or jillyemmons@gmail.com.

Save These Dates: Uncommon November, and December Worship Opportunities
  • Sunday, November 14th is Thankoffering Sunday – a worship that is led exclusively by the women of our congregation with a special presentation by Janna Smith, former synodical president of the Women of the ELCA.
  • Sunday, November 21st, plan for worship to be outdoors only, weather permitting. The majority of our Sunday worshipers gather outdoors and Pastor Sterling has not seen their faces in too long.  We will also be asking our Lord to bless the most recently created batch of prayer cloths.
  • On Wednesday, November 24th at 6 pm we will forgo Intergenerational Worship for a special Thanksgiving Worship.
  • Instead of meeting on Wednesday, December 15th at the building for Intergenerational Worship, we will instead meet at 5 pm at Haven Hills in Lodi for Christmas Caroling and fellowship with the residents there. Our Confirmands will also be joining us and anyone is welcome. The home only asks that we wear masks while we are there. After Haven Hills, we will do the same at Our House in Lodi at 5:40 pm and then at Good Samaritan/Divine Savior at 6:20 pm. There will be no regular worship or Confirmation that night.
  • Our worship time on Sunday, December 19th will be the Sunday School Christmas Program.
  • On Wednesday, December 22nd at 6 pm we will forgo Intergenerational Worship for a special “Blue Christmas” prayer and healing service for anyone with any hurts or pain during the holiday season.
  • Christmas Eve Worship will be on Friday, December 24th at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
  • COVID permitting, we will have a Christmas Day Hymn sing worship at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 25th.
  • The only planned worship service the week of December 26th will be 9:00 am on Sunday, December 26th. There will not be Sunday School, Confirmation, or Intergenerational Wednesday Worship that week.

Mission Opportunity – Kinship Mentoring of Columbia County
Kinship is a “Big Brothers, Big Sisters” style community-based non-profit and it needs mentors for youth aged 5-14. In their letter to Pastor Sterling, their chairperson asked “Who better than Christian adults to be mentors?” Who better? If you are selected, you will be given the training, support, and structure to make yours and the child’s experience safe and positive. For more information see www.kinshipcc.org or reach their program coordinator Sara McChesney at sara@kinshipcc.org or (608) 697-3260.
New Members Orientation –  Sunday, December 5th at 10:15 am. Are you curious about what it means to be a member of Dekorra Lutheran Church? Do you know someone who is looking for a church home or curious about God and Jesus? Well, we have an event for you. Our next New Member Orientation is Sunday, December 5th at 10:15 am. Most, if not all, teams and committees will have a representative there to share a picture of the life of this congregation and answer your questions. If after we spill our guts you still want to join (HAHA), then we will install them as members during either the Wednesday, December 8th worship and/or the Sunday, December 12th worship (their choice). Please let Pastor Sterling if you plan on joining us for the orientation.
Sponsors Needed for New Members –  Are you willing to be a guide/mentor/friend to members of our congregation? If so, then please call or shoot an email to Pastor Sterling to let him know. He is looking to pair upcoming new members with sponsors. We would ask the sponsors to attend the new member orientation and the worship service the new member is installed at. Thank you!
Ministers of Audio/Visuals and the Clicker Needed –  Are you willing to work on our new video and audio system? Are willing to be the “minister of the clicker”? If so, please reach out to both Sharon Kampen (kampensg@yahoo.com) and Pastor Sterling (pastorsterling@centurytel.net). If you haven’t been trained, Pastor Sterling will train you. There is also an easy-to-follow manual and there will soon be a checklist. Doing ether job is easier than it looks. We are hoping to train at least 12 folks so that any one person only needs to be on the schedule once every few months.
Lutheran Summer Music Program Accepting Nominations Now – A True Music Academy for High School Students
Lutheran Summer Music is a month-long music academy for high school students. During this program, they participate in large ensembles (band, choir, orchestra) and chamber music; receive lessons on primary and secondary instruments; and enroll in electives such as chapel choir, church music, handbells, composition, jazz band, conducting musical theatre, and more. The daily schedule includes morning and evening prayer, classes, recreation activities, and concerts by faculty and guest artists. It is a fantastic month of music-making and worship! See www.lsmacademy.org for more information and how to nominate a music-loving student.
The Women of Dekorra are planning a Bake and Lefse Sale on Saturday, November 20th, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  We are raising funds to help our youth in their plans for attending the Youth Rally in Minneapolis next summer, as well as funds for the missions and work of the women.  It has been many months since we have had a project and hope we will have wonderful participation.

Wow, look at all the food you all have already shared this month. This is just a friendly reminder that this Sunday we bless our yellow bag work and mission. This Sunday and Wednesday are our All Saints worship services. So, if you have food or basic needs to share, please remember to bring them this Sunday before worship.

Lord, please bless the people who share the good things in their lives, but most of all bless the people who need those good things. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

8000 People are Refugees from Afghanistan at Fort McCoy – Here’s How You Can Help
This has happened so quickly, that the situation will change weekly. The Afghani refugees in our area are at Fort McCoy. At the moment, the Catholic Charities of La Crosse is working to get specific basic needs to these homeless human beings. Eventually, resettlement will begin, with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS)/Lutheran Social Services (LSS) resettling 100 families to the Greater Milwaukee Area. Jewish Social Services hopes to resettle 50 more families in the Greater Madison Area. Resettlement will be difficult. These folks will not be allowed to legally work for around 6 months, because that is the time it will take for them to get green cards. They will also not be able to access the social safety net until after that time. That means they will need material and financial support much longer than most refugees that our nation welcomes. If you want to learn how to help specifically, please see the September 9th of the Synod’s “What Matters” e-newsletter at https://scsw-elca.org/news/.

Needed: Crafters for Prayer Cloth Ministry A prayer cloth is a mini-version of a prayer shawl. The crafter infuses prayer to provide love and comfort to the person who will receive the Prayer Cloth. Weekly View From Da Pews
October 29, 2021
When we are not sure, we are alive!—Graham Greene
  There’s a smugness, a dead-endedness, a finality, in being certain.
When we are certain, we’re not open to new ideas or methods.  Life is less an adventure and more an unending corridor.
Being certain, being closed, is not life affirming.  Many of us work addicts are sure about just about everything.  We’re rarely open or vulnerable in any way; we do not trust intuition or others’ opinions, we don’t recognize our own need for flexibility.
We must learn that the willingness to allow other possibilities gives us life, it renews us and makes us a living organism.
A promise to myself!
I will be more open to change.  I know that it will help keep me fresh, aware, open and happier.  And out of a rut!
Just a reminder, this is Pastor Appreciation Month.  A card or simple hand shake with kind words, or perhaps a gift of cookies.  Let’s show are appreciation for Pastor Sterling’s caring about us and a job well done.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 06th, Dekorra will be cleaning up the roadside on county Highway CS from the interstate to Whalens Grade.  This takes a good sized crew and I hope all the confirmation kids can show up with lots of adult help.
Another reminder for all the committees.  We need your budget expectations for 2022 so that we can put together a budget in the coming months.  We need those numbers by the November 09th “All Committee” meeting.
10 Ways to know you are a successful father!
“Sometimes the poorest man leaves his children the richest inheritance.” (Ruth E. Renkel) There is not one single path to successful parenting.  All fathers are not created equal in method nor in standards.  What sets a successful father apart from the pack is passion for his duty and the ability to love unconditionally.  Possession of these two traits is the common denominator in all successful parents.  The following can be considered one of the 10 “greatest hits” of an awesome Dad.
#5  Friends
We are usually only as good as the company we keep.  Friends are an important part of your child’s life.  Chances are they spend more time in the company of their friends than with you.  That is a very large amount of influence that is not under your control.  It is imperative that you have a relationship with these friends.  Make the effort to know them as well as their parents.  Your child’s friends should be diverse and inspiring.
At the October council meeting, Lyle advised the group that so far this year, we are $21,082 in the hole regarding our giving compared to years passed.  I know that there is a pandemic going on, I know that the weekly attendance is down, I know that some of us are hurting financially.
We have two and a half months before we close the books on 2021.  My hope and prayers are that we can somehow find it in our hearts to “dig a little deeper in the well” and come up with some extra giving to offset this shortfall.
Each month you receive in the mail the envelopes for the coming month.  In the packet of envelopes you will also find an envelope for the first Sunday of the next month.  So you end up with two envelopes for the first Sunday of each month.  I would suggest that instead of throwing out one of those envelopes you use that envelope to give a little extra.
My faith is strong enough that I am sure the Lord will provide for His church and also for those who provide that extra giving.
January is right around the corner and so is our annual meeting.  We will be filling some vacancies on the church counsel and also replacing some committee members.  Please consider stepping up and volunteering to run for election to these very important positions.
That’s all for this week.  Time to go hang some sheetrock at the Habitat home.  And YES we are looking for some help with this build.
William
p.s. Important message below from Pastor Sterling

Weekly Announcements –October 24&27th, 2021

UPCOMING AT DEKORRA

Current COVID Response: Updated 9/3/21
When the Council met on August 12th it made several changes to our indoor policy. In the last couple of weeks, COVID activity and infections have gone from low levels in Columbia County to the same high levels as they were at Easter. Since even the vaccinated can spread the virus and we do not want to stop our ministries or visits to the homebound, here are the changes effective August 22nd: 1) Mask (i.e. multilayered cotton or silk masks with no vents, disposable surgical masks, N95 masks) will be required for all indoor activities for anyone 6 years old or older unless there is a medical exemption. We believe this matches the practices of Lodi Schools; 2) We will mostly remain seated during worship, avoid close contact during the sharing the peace, pre-distribute communion elements via the Fellowship Cups (you may bring your own), and return to limited indoor seating and social spacing; 3a) A/C or Heat in Sanctuary turned on 60 minutes before the start of worship; 3b) Engage the HVAC system in Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall 5 minutes before the start of worship only (have the fan running in the Sanctuary at that time) but only open the doors and windows away from CS and Smith Road, this should give us some of the benefits of airflow, keep our sanctuary a little more comfortable, and avoid most of the noise; and 4) Since the most dangerous thing we do is sing indoors as a group, we will stop doing that and rely on a single soloist/cantor once again.

Just a reminder that County CS road cleanup is Saturday, November 6 at 9:00 am. The fall yard cleanup will begin at 8:00 am the same day and run until approximately noon. Bring your spouse, a friend, or your kids and go out and do some "trash talking"! Please dress accordingly and bring a pair of gloves.

Acolyte Training – October 24th, During Sunday School
Serving as an acolyte at worship is one of the traditional services 5th and 6th graders (as well as older kids and adults) share with our community. This year’s training will happen on October 24th. If you have a 5th or 6th grader in Sunday School, please try not to miss that day. Even in these strange pandemic days, acolytes are an important part of the worship team and we are excited to serve with our young people.
Save These Dates: Uncommon October, November, and December Worship Opportunities
  • You are invited to wear red and bright colors on Sunday, October 31st. This is Reformation Sunday, the day we thank the Holy Spirit for the creation of our confession.
  • Sunday, November 7th is All Saints Sunday, where we remember and grieve the people that we have loved but lost to the temporary death of the grave. If there is anyone like that in your heart, no matter how they are connected to you or how long they have been asleep, then please call or email their names to Pastor Sterling by October 31st so we can remember them with you.
  • Sunday, November 14th is Thankoffering Sunday – a worship that is led exclusively by the women of our congregation.
  • Sunday, November 21st, plan for worship to be outdoors only, weather permitting. The majority of our Sunday worshipers gather outdoors and I have not seen their faces too long.
  • On Wednesday, November 24th at 6 pm we will forgo Intergenerational Worship for a special Thanksgiving Worship.
Save the Date: November 2nd – 5th Wanting Professional Holiday Photos and to Support the Mission Trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering?
Dekorra member Sheri Birchler will be offering professional photography sittings in time for the holidays. She will donate the sitting fee to DLC for the 2022 ELCA Youth Gathering. Stay tuned for more details.

Mission Opportunity – Kinship Mentoring of Columbia County
Kinship is a “Big Brothers, Big Sisters” style community-based non-profit and it needs mentors for youth aged 5-14. If you are selected, you will be given the training, support, and structure to make yours and the child’s experience safe and positive. For more information see www.kinshipcc.org or reach their program coordinator Sara McChesney at sara@kinshipcc.org or (608) 697-3260.

Weekly View From Da Pews
October 15, 2021
“The greater the ignorance, the greater the dogmatism!”
  Sir William Osler
A place where rules, ordinances, and laws are prevalent is a place of total inflexibility, dedicated to ignorance.
If one is dogmatic in his thinking, instruction and style of management, he demonstrates his limited abilities.  Fear and ignorance are synonymous with dogmatism.
Workaholics are usually dogmatic managers.  They run things their way, or no way.  This kind of dogma breeds ignorance, breeds workaholism and vice versa.
When I am absolutely certain of something, I need to question my inflexibility and make certain that my intransigence is not a symptom of my work addiction!  ( From: Meditations for Men Who Do Too Much)
My own opinion is to surround oneself with great thinkers, listen to their views and pick the best way forward.  That is why I love working with this church council and Pastor Sterling!  We communicate-communicate-communicate!
We need those numbers by the November “All Committee” meeting.
#3  The Bedtime Story
Every time you read to your child, it’s an intimate and special moment.  They have your full attention and that’s the thing they crave most.  Daddy adds the funny voices and physical animations as he reads.  Your daughter’s eyes light up and a smile takes over her face as you talk in your moose voice and put pretend antlers on your head.  Silliness is something you both enjoy and understand, but more importantly this time together builds trust and makes your child feel secure.
  YIKES!!!
I know that I am a day late with my message.  Yesterday was a Habitat day that started at 6am and concluded at 9pm.  A very long day but we got a lot done.
See you all on Sunday at “The Gathering Place”!

We will take the opportunity to grieve, remember and commemorate on November 7th during worship. Please call the office or email Pastor Sterling at pastorsterling@centurytel.net to let us know who you would like to be named during the service. Please include your relationship with that individual. The person you asked to be named and remember need not be family and does not need to have died in the last year.
