8000 People are Refugees from Afghanistan at Fort McCoy – Here’s How You Can Help This has happened so quickly, that the situation will change weekly. The Afghani refugees in our area are at Fort McCoy. At the moment, the Catholic Charities of La Crosse is working to get specific basic needs to these homeless human beings. Eventually, resettlement will begin, with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS)/Lutheran Social Services (LSS) resettling 100 families to the Greater Milwaukee Area. Jewish Social Services hopes to resettle 50 more families in the Greater Madison Area. Resettlement will be difficult. These folks will not be allowed to legally work for around 6 months, because that is the time it will take for them to get green cards. They will also not be able to access the social safety net until after that time. That means they will need material and financial support much longer than most refugees that our nation welcomes. If you want to learn how to help specifically, please see the September 9th of the Synod’s “What Matters” e-newsletter at https://scsw-elca.org/news/. Needed: Crafters for Prayer Cloth Ministry A prayer cloth is a mini-version of a prayer shawl. The crafter infuses prayer to provide love and comfort to the person who will receive the Prayer Cloth. They are small enough to be tucked in pockets, and purses. They also can be carried into surgery and taken on vacations. Anyone who needs comfort or wants support in their prayer life could use one. Our Pastor could take them on visits, have a basket available to take, or donate to local community facilities. Are you a knitter, crocheter, or quilter? Just want to help? You can sign up on the bulletin board, and patterns and yard will be in the Fellowship Hall starting in October. Please contact Jill Emmons if you have any questions or details on what these look like – (608) 692-1425 or jillyemmons@gmail.com. October 29, 2021 When we are not sure, we are alive!—Graham Greene There’s a smugness, a dead-endedness, a finality, in being certain. When we are certain, we’re not open to new ideas or methods. Life is less an adventure and more an unending corridor. Being certain, being closed, is not life affirming. Many of us work addicts are sure about just about everything. We’re rarely open or vulnerable in any way; we do not trust intuition or others’ opinions, we don’t recognize our own need for flexibility. We must learn that the willingness to allow other possibilities gives us life, it renews us and makes us a living organism. A promise to myself! I will be more open to change. I know that it will help keep me fresh, aware, open and happier. And out of a rut! Just a reminder, this is Pastor Appreciation Month. A card or simple hand shake with kind words, or perhaps a gift of cookies. Let’s show are appreciation for Pastor Sterling’s caring about us and a job well done. Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 06th, Dekorra will be cleaning up the roadside on county Highway CS from the interstate to Whalens Grade. This takes a good sized crew and I hope all the confirmation kids can show up with lots of adult help. Another reminder for all the committees. We need your budget expectations for 2022 so that we can put together a budget in the coming months. We need those numbers by the November 09th “All Committee” meeting. 10 Ways to know you are a successful father! “Sometimes the poorest man leaves his children the richest inheritance.” (Ruth E. Renkel) There is not one single path to successful parenting. All fathers are not created equal in method nor in standards. What sets a successful father apart from the pack is passion for his duty and the ability to love unconditionally. Possession of these two traits is the common denominator in all successful parents. The following can be considered one of the 10 “greatest hits” of an awesome Dad. #5 Friends We are usually only as good as the company we keep. Friends are an important part of your child’s life. Chances are they spend more time in the company of their friends than with you. That is a very large amount of influence that is not under your control. It is imperative that you have a relationship with these friends. Make the effort to know them as well as their parents. Your child’s friends should be diverse and inspiring. At the October council meeting, Lyle advised the group that so far this year, we are $21,082 in the hole regarding our giving compared to years passed. I know that there is a pandemic going on, I know that the weekly attendance is down, I know that some of us are hurting financially. We have two and a half months before we close the books on 2021. My hope and prayers are that we can somehow find it in our hearts to “dig a little deeper in the well” and come up with some extra giving to offset this shortfall. Each month you receive in the mail the envelopes for the coming month. In the packet of envelopes you will also find an envelope for the first Sunday of the next month. So you end up with two envelopes for the first Sunday of each month. I would suggest that instead of throwing out one of those envelopes you use that envelope to give a little extra. My faith is strong enough that I am sure the Lord will provide for His church and also for those who provide that extra giving. January is right around the corner and so is our annual meeting. We will be filling some vacancies on the church counsel and also replacing some committee members. Please consider stepping up and volunteering to run for election to these very important positions. That’s all for this week. Time to go hang some sheetrock at the Habitat home. And YES we are looking for some help with this build. William p.s. Important message below from Pastor Sterling Hi Bill, Can you do me a favor? I just scheduled the A/V training with Fearings but we already have the announcements printed. Can you add that info to you weekly letter to the congregation? It will be at 5:30pm on Tuesday, November 9th – right before All Committee Night. Anyone who is curious about the new system works or wants be trained in its use is welcome and encouraged to participate. Thank you so much, Sterling

October 15, 2021 “The greater the ignorance, the greater the dogmatism!” Sir William Osler A place where rules, ordinances, and laws are prevalent is a place of total inflexibility, dedicated to ignorance. If one is dogmatic in his thinking, instruction and style of management, he demonstrates his limited abilities. Fear and ignorance are synonymous with dogmatism. Workaholics are usually dogmatic managers. They run things their way, or no way. This kind of dogma breeds ignorance, breeds workaholism and vice versa. When I am absolutely certain of something, I need to question my inflexibility and make certain that my intransigence is not a symptom of my work addiction! ( From: Meditations for Men Who Do Too Much) My own opinion is to surround oneself with great thinkers, listen to their views and pick the best way forward. That is why I love working with this church council and Pastor Sterling! We communicate-communicate-communicate! Just a reminder, this is Pastor Appreciation Month. A card or simple hand shake with kind words, or perhaps a gift of cookies. Let’s show are appreciation for Pastor Sterling’s caring about us and a job well done. They have your full attention and that’s the thing they crave most. Daddy adds the funny voices and physical animations as he reads. Your daughter’s eyes light up and a smile takes over her face as you talk in your moose voice and put pretend antlers on your head. Silliness is something you both enjoy and understand, but more importantly this time together builds trust and makes your child feel secure. YIKES!!! At the October council meeting, Lyle advised the group that so far this year, we are $21,082 in the hole regarding our giving compared to years passed. Please call the office or email Pastor Sterling at pastorsterling@centurytel.net to let us know who you would like to be named during the service. The Tao Te Ching That is what so much of our compulsion is about: it is not “natural” for men is this age, in this society, to “let go.” We hold on to old models of success and sometimes to disastrous ways of seeing things to fruition. How often have we clung to what we thought was the life raft of sanity, of our work, of our need to complete a task, for the sake of the task, not for what it brings us. Father God, It will be important for me to keep my real goals in perspective today. I will need to be mindful of what makes me and those I love happy, not just what keeps me occupied. From “Meditations for Men Who Do Too Much” by Jonathon Lazear Gee! This kind of reminds me of someone I know. Maybe I should heed my own advice! The following can be considered one of the 10 “greatest hits” of an awesome Dad and I think it should be #1. I started this last week with #1 being communication. This week I will talk about #2, “respect and love your wife.” “The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” (Rev. Theodore Hesburgh) Your son will grow up one day to treat a woman the same way his father treated women. Your daughter will grow to expect the treatment that was provided in Dad’s example. This country has an epidemic of disrespectful young men and young women with low self-esteem. We are daily bombarded with examples of male prowess and female promiscuity. That’s no accident. We have a duty to stand and fight this battle against good family principles. That starts by always showing your wife the love and respect she deserves. Speaking of love, did you know that this is a Hall Mark month, (aren’t they all). It is Pastor Appreciation month. It would be great if we as a congregation could show Pastor Sterling a little love by sending him a card or just simple telling him how much you appreciate all that he does for Dekorra. I think in my card I may include a coupon for Culvers. This last Tuesday the church council had a special meeting to discuss the new church constitution and the work of the constitution committee. After 3 hours of discussion and some minor “tweaks” to what the committee had done, their work was sent off to the synod’s offices for their input and hopefully an OK. If the synod OK’s the draft, they will send it back to us for a ratification vote by the congregation at our annual meeting in January. When we get the OK from the synod, we will make copies of the document available, for your viewing pleasure, using several means of communication. This will enable us to hopefully address the issue at the annual meeting in a quick manner. Because of the work done on the new constitution and the new wording, we will have to approve all new “Continuing Resolutions and By laws.” The constitution committee is now working on these and they should also be ready by the annual meeting for a congregational vote. Today I celebrated a life well lived with the family of “Chainsaw” Mills. I will always remember him as a “Man’s Man”, someone you were very glad to call friend, brother, confidant. One of the founding members of Dekorra Men for Christ. God’s peace to you brother! Burton R. “Chainsaw” Mills, 71, of Lodi, WI. Entered peacefully into Heaven on Wednesday September 29, 2021 holding his daughters hands. He bravely fought Dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He was born on February 24, 1950 in Fond du Lac, WI. To Burton and Betty Mills. He was a 1968 graduate of Beloit Memorial H.S... Burton served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was a proud patriot. In 1979, he started his 21 year career as a Sales Rep/Area Manager for Ameritech. At the age of 50, he retired. Thanks to all who brought “yellow bags” last Sunday, Dottie would have been very proud of your generosity. That’s all for this week folks. Time to get busy around the house. See you all on Sunday at “The Gathering Place” william . Weekly View From Da Pews
October 01, 2021 A Prayer for Connection God, for many of us, this past year was filled with isolation. Despite technological advances, we watched relationships change and drift apart—and we grieved the loss. But God, we know You can redeem what’s broken. You care about community, and You created us for connection. And, You also gave us Your Holy Spirit who understands what we are facing and prays on our behalf. So when we feel alone, please remind us that You are near—and that You’re not done working. Re-establish our relationships and show us how to make meaningful connections—even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Ultimately, we want our loneliness to lead us closer to You and to the people that You’ve called us to love and support. So take our isolation, our disconnection, our social anxiety, and our fear—and turn it into something beautiful that draws the world closer to You and to each other. In Jesus’ name, Amen. As we enter into our new church year, it is more important than ever, that we reach out to each other and lend our support and a helping hand. We had so hoped that this year would be different, that this covid thing would be going away for good—not so. So please, be kinder, be more respectful, be more considerate of each other and do what you can to ease others fears and concerns. Yellow Bag Sunday—did you remember? Two years ago today my Dottie passed away and it would be most fitting that we remember her on this her last Sunday. She worked so hard to bring about this “yellow Bag” project and all the hope that it gives to people in need. Please, let us flood the alter area with yellow bags in her memory. The next item is for “Men only”! I am including two items for “men only” in this weekly update. The first one is posted below, the second one is an attachment. Each week I will post another of the 10 ways to know you are a successful father. #1 Real communication! Talking is the most valuable tool in a father’s tool belt. Conversation is information and information is understanding. Serious, funny, or totally random. Every conversation had with your child is invaluable to you as a parent. Know your child better than they know themselves. Then tailor your guidance towards that knowledge. Regarding the item that I have attached for ‘Men Only”. I am a member of the Lutheran Men in Mission Task Force for our synod and I am on the staff for our “One Year Too Live” retreats. The article that I have attached will give you some idea of what to expect if you should choose to attend our next retreat in 2022 at the Mackenzie center in Poynette. Do you wish for a better life? Do you want a closer walk with Christ? Do you want a closer relationship with your wife and children? Than plan to attend next year’s retreat on September23,24 and 25. You can contact me anytime for more info. Mark your calendars for October 12 at 6:30pm. That is ‘ALL Committee” night and it would be great to see you there, joining a committee and helping to guide your church. I think I have said enough for this week. I hope to see all of you this Sunday along with you “yellow Bag” full of needed items. William, a Disciple of Christ Christianity, in its purest form, is nothing more than seeing Jesus. Christian service, in its purest form, is nothing more than imitating Him who we see. To see His Majesty and to imitate Him, that is the sum of Christianity! williamaschleichert@gmail.com 608-697-4434(c) |
